We've all been there. Roaming the aisles of TJ Maxx, idly perusing the wares, not really planning on buying anything (disposable income? in this economy?), but secretly open to the possibility that there is something we in fact cannot live without, when like a bolt of pastel lightning, there it is! The perfect piece of kitsch! The one that would look equally at home in a La Quinta hotel lobby or an urgent care waiting room. The one that speaks to our suburban soul, but sadly does not fit in our mid-sized sedan. However, nothing as trivial as practicality has ever deterred a true connoisseur, as this happy Buford shopper can attest.

Gwinnett's Most Misunderstood Street Sign

Long-time DG subscribers have no doubt read our PSA about driving in Gwinnett, but we felt the need to highlight one particular street sign for emphasis as it seems to be almost completely misunderstood. If you have driven in Gwinnett for more than about fifteen minutes, you are likely aware that Gwinnetians have almost no concept of what a stop sign means, but somewhat ironically, they almost always interpret a 'keep moving' sign as a stop sign. *editor's note: yes, we are aware of what 'ironic' means. That's why we said 'somewhat ironically'. It's not like we're Alanis Morissette, who sang an entire song about irony, in which nothing ironic happened, and then named the song "Ironic", which is in fact the only ironic thing about the song. But we digress, and we're not entirely sure what it is about a 'keep moving' sign that inspires such trepidation in Gwinnetian hearts, but it's not uncommon to be behind a line of car...

Cemetery Conveniently Located in Outfield

If you find yourself paying respects at the Old Hog Mountain Church Cemetery in Dacula, don't forget to bring your baseball glove, as home runs have been known to ricochet among the tombstones. In the photo above, the home plate backstop can be seen to the right, and on the left, Hog Mountain Church's novel concept of using a graveyard in lieu of an outfield fence. Pictured here is the view from the batter's box, with tombstones scattered among the outfield shadows. Those in the mood for a sandlot pickup game can find the field in the triangular space created by the confluence of Braselton Highway and Hog Mountain Church Road, though etiquette suggests that in the event of an outfield funeral, you follow Babe Ruth's example and call your shot to give mourners a chance to field their position.
