Phil Niekro 'Parkway' is 1/4 Mile Long

When you think of the word 'parkway', what comes to mind? Perhaps the majestic Blue Ridge Parkway, 469 winding miles of scenic Appalachian mountain vistas. Perhaps the Natchez Trace Parkway, following 444 miles of the old Natchez trail from Tennessee to Mississippi. Perhaps the Phil Niekro Parkway, a dead-end strip in Norcross barely a quarter of a mile long.

Yes, we are talking about that Phil Niekro. Our beloved Knucksie. Atlanta Braves legend, owner of the most devastating knuckleball of all time and also MLB's greatest back hair (see last image for proof). Member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Five time All-Star. Five time Gold Glove winner. Roberto Clemente Award. No-hitter. 318 career wins, 3,342 strikeouts.

Yes, that Phil Niekro, a literal god among men, who played 24 MLB seasons and buckled the knees of everyone from Ralph Kiner to Pete Rose. They gave this icon of our national pastime 1,200 feet of dead-end pavement tucked away in the nether regions of Norcross and had the sheer audacity to call it a parkway. The indignity truly boggles the mind, and we here at the Daily Gwinnetian are campaigning passionately to get this hometown hero the recognition he deserves with our proposal to rename the nonsensical Sugarloaf Parkway to the Phil Niekro Parkway. If you can tell us what a sugarloaf is, we're all ears, but until then #justiceforKnucksie.
