Destination Alert: Decatur

A beautiful spring weekend is just around the corner, and many Gwinnetians are probably looking for something to do or somewhere to go. Have no fear, loyal DG readers, we've got you covered on both fronts. Decatur is just about within shouting distance of most Gwinnetians, but what's there to do down there in Dekalb County, you ask?

Well if you're not too busy getting mugged, look no further than Decatur's premier attraction, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation headquarters at 3121 Panthersville Road. You can see many interesting exhibits in the GBI museum, including the fibers that helped solve the infamous Atlanta Child Murders, but the real highlight is the Martian Monkey.

No, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you, as you can clearly see above, the Martian Monkey is in fact on display. But what exactly is the Martian Monkey?

The Martian Monkey made a dramatic appearance on what is now Veterans Highway in Cobb County on July 8, 1953, with the aid of a couple of barbers, a butcher, a bottle of Nair, and some green food-coloring. The US was in the grip of a wave of UFO sightings that had begun in 1947, and people were eager to believe. Unfortunately, the Martian Monkey turned out to be just that, a monkey, but a monkey with a tale to tell. We've attached a 1998 AJC article below:
