The Dollar Tree A/V Club Reviews: Hobo With a Shotgun

Whilst scouring the shelves at our favorite Dollar Tree on New Hope Road (the same location that our loyal readers will remember may or may not have experienced a bombing), we were thrilled to find a copy of Hobo With a Shotgun lurking among the $1.25 DVDs.

As the title suggests, Hobo With a Shotgun follows the trials and tribulations of the titular hobo, played with glorious aplomb by the inimitable Rutger Hauer, and his shotgun, played by a shotgun.

Our story begins as Hobo hops a train to Hope Town, a city without a lot of hope, where he witnesses the depths of human depravity and befriends Abby, a hooker with a heart of gold. All he wants is to buy a used lawnmower and live out the rest of his days in self-employed landscaping bliss, but the crimelords who run the city are having none of it. Gratuitous violence ensues, including gladiator bum fights, decapitations, shotgun blasts (of course), and one memorable octopus, but as Hobo and Abby prove, the real story isn't the people we blasted into oblivion with a shotgun, but the friends we made along the way.

Hobo With a Shotgun is an ultra-violent technicolor love letter to the grindhouse films of the 1970s and 80s, just the sort of fare we like to unwind with here at DGHQ. Head over to the New Hope Dollar Tree and grab a copy, or if you're the first reader to comment on this post and share the Daily Gwinnetian on the social media outlet of your choice, we'll send you ours free of charge.
