The Crusade for Mulberrian Independence


Gwinnetians, we know you're familiar with the Declaration of Independence, adopted this day in 1776. We know you're familiar with the war against alien invaders documented in the blockbuster movie Independence Day, chronicling the events of July 4, 1996, and its somewhat less than blockbuster follow-up, Independence Day: Resurgence, describing the aliens' return twenty years later.

If you are a longtime reader of the DG, you are no doubt familiar with the ongoing Crusade for Mulberrian Independence happening right here in our fair county. What is at stake? As the Declaration famously stated, "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." Our brothers and sisters on Hog Mountain are asking for nothing more than this, and nothing less.

Speaking of unalienable, what did President Thomas J. Whittmore say in Independence Day? "We're fighting for our right to live, to exist ... we will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight!"


So this Independence Day, we ask that you remember those who fought for our freedom in the past, and those who are fighting for theirs in the present. The arc of history bends toward liberty, may it ever continue to do so.
