Relleno Review: Trader Joe's

We haven't had a relleno for a while here at DGHQ, so when we stopped by Trader Joe's at the Forum in Norcross and spotted these we got pretty excited.

A package of two set us back $5.99. It would be a sin to microwave that sublimest of peppers, the noble poblano, so we baked ours, eagerly awaiting the timer to reach zero as notes of warm asadero cheese filled the air at GDHQ. When the timer dinged, we popped them out of the oven, drizzled on some "Mexican style tomato sauce", and dug in.

The verdict? If you need a relleno fix, this will get you through until you can make it to La Cazuela. The Trader Joe's relleno is a bit greasy, heavy on the batter, and the sauce could use more flavor, but for freezer food, it's about the best you could hope for. It's no La Caz, but it's an admirable attempt to get chiles rellenos into the hands of the masses, and we can't argue with that.
