Gwinnett County Rebrand Still Confusing Some Gwinnetians

Although Gwinnett County's rebrand is now five years strong, many Gwinnetians remain oblivious to its meaning, or even to the fact that Gwinnett has a brand, despite the fact that countless tax dollars and labor hours have gone into designing the new Gwinnett logo and replacing all county signage with the colorful emblem. We asked The Man On The Street for his thoughts on the matter, and he responded, "To be honest, the first time I saw one of those signs, I thought it was the Google headquarters or maybe we were getting the Olympics or something." The Strange Redemption of Lewis Cooksey

Gwinnetians, this is a story 100 years in the making. Seen above, an adolescent named Lewis Cooksey, "the boy that laid the bolt that threw 38". On August 23, 1908, the #38 train derailed at Mangum's Crossing in Sugar Hill, which is now the Buford Drive/Peachtree Industrial intersection. The engineer, Benjamin Dewberry, and his assistant, Mayson Wadkins, were both horrifically scalded to death in the accident, which was blamed on a large bolt that had been placed on the tracks, allegedly by Lewis Cooksey. As the story goes, Cooksey believed the train was carrying fruit (it wasn't) and he hoped to obtain some by derailing the train, though the only fruit of his labors was a couple of felony indictments for murder and train-wrecking. Lewis Cooksey, also spelled 'Louis Cooksie' in publications at the time (both are used in the article above), was acquitted the next month, as seen in the September 1908 article from the Atlanta Journal excerpted above. It is none other than the dumping ground for everything that can't be sold ... at a Park Avenue Thrift store. That's right, my dudes, if it goes unsold at any of the Gwinnett-area Park Avenue Thrift stores or doesn't meet their rigorous pre-owned merchandise standards, it winds up at the Park Avenue Thrift Outlet. Use your imagination and think of the wares that are unfit for a Park Avenue Thrift, then go lower. But why Wednesday, you ask? That, my dudes, is because the outlet uses flat rate pricing. Everything in the store is the same price! The price varies by day, for example on Saturday everything is $1.75, but on Wednesday, every item in the store is 25 CENTS!
